Jack White pictures
Captain Jack White 1879 -1946.
This photo circa 1930.
The view from White Hall across the lush
Braid Valley in a south-west direction towards Ballymena. In its
heyday the area immediately in front of White Hall (the foreground of
the photo) was a maintained ornamental garden replete with a small
lake and swans. White and his four sisters spent many summers
here.
In Misfits, White described it as "like a
mother's lap".
White Hall, Broughshane
The White family home just outside
Broughshane, Co. Antrim is an old Georgian style home from the early
18th century. Although Jack White was born in Co. Antrim he spent
little of his early years in the area. However he inherited the
house on the death of his mother in the mid 20s and resided there on
a permanent basis after he met his second wife, Noreen Shanahan in
1937.
Another view of the White's family home.
A plaque near the front door commemorates the fact that the house is
a heritage site and of historical interest. However this refers to
the fact that White Hall was also the home of Jack White's father,
Sir George Stuart White, the 'Hero of Ladysmith'. No mention is of
Jack White or of his role in instigating the formation of the Irish
Citizen Army.
The ruin of the gate lodge at the entrance
to White Hall, on the outskirts of Broughshane. UVF slogans have
been daubed on the walls.
Jack White is buried in the family plot on
the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church in the centre of
Broughshane. The gravestone records "Captain Jack Robert White,
D.S.O., son of the above (Field Marshal Sir George Stuart White).
Born May 22nd 1879. Died February 2nd 1946
