Letter from the Awareness League

Solidarity with Nigeria

This was published in "Workers World", a Cape Town-based paper put out by ILRIG [International Labour Research and Information group], a left labour service organisation.

Ilrig recently responded to an appeal sent out by the American based Worker' s Solidarity Alliance. They were asking people to write letters to protest to the repressive government of General Ibrahim Babangida in Nigeria. Here is an extract from the response we got from Awareness League, one of the organizations in Nigeria, which is fighting against the government of General Babangida.

Dear Comrades

We write to acknowledge receipt of your letter of support and solidarity addressed to the Nigerian military authorities on behalf of our four imprisoned colleagues as well as other activists and human rights campaigners in Nigeria. The letter was passed on to us by the American-based Workers' Solidarity Alliance.

We thank you very much for your support. We are a group of libertarian socialists in Nigeria. Our membership is less than a thousand. What is more, we have suffered severe repression in the hands of military junta of General Ibrahim Babaginda.

Yours in the struggle
