We do not want soldiers passing through

To National and International Public Opinion
To the Local, National and International Press

The San Juan de la Libertad Autonomous Municipality,
State of Chiapas, on August 13, 2001.

The Autonomous Municipality authorities for San Juan de la Libertad, Chiapas, are vehemently denouncing the actions of the federal government, given that patrols of federal soldiers, Public Security and Judicial police are carrying out patrols, day after day, in the lands of the Autonomous Municipality, on the highways and dirt roads in the municipality, and even airplane and helicopter flights, across the mountains, threateningly. Because of this, the residents of the Municipality are denouncing the actions and these military, Public Security and Judicial movements, because we are not accustomed to those movements, and we completely reject those actions by the government.

Those patrols by convoys of soldiers are taking place every day, primarily along the highway stretches from San Cayetano to Puerto CatA~CR and from CatA~CR to El Bosque.

If the government wants peaceable we do not want soldiers passing through. The men and women are, therefore, making that demand and totally rejecting the bad actions of the government. We no longer need guards, we know how to live by ourselves.

Taking this opportunity to inform the national and international media,

Sincerely,

Municipal Authorities.
Municipal President
Municipal Trustee
First Councilor
