Mexico. February of 2000.
To the people of Mexico:
To the people and governments of the world:
Brothers and sisters:
In the past days, in which it has been shown that the persecution of young students is already a policy of the government of Mr. Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, 64 students of the Normal Rural School, Luis Villareal, of El Mexe, were arrested with an excess of violence, in the Francisco I. Madero municipality, state of Hidalgo.
The demands of the rural normalist students are rational: that their school should not disappear and that their graduates who qualify should receive teaching posts.
Without trying even the slightest approach, the government of the state of Hidalgo and the federal government attacked the normalists, beat them, kept them missing and soon presented defendants of "robbery". The indescribable "Preventative Federal Police", which specializes in persecuting, beating, and arresting young students, participated in the action to compensate for their ineptitude in the battle against organized crime.
The men, women, children, and elders of the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional condemn this attack, we support the normalists of El Mexe, Hidalgo, and call upon the strikers in particular and Mexicans in general to demand freedom for the imprisoned normalists and the fufillment of their just demands.
On behalf of the Comite Clandestino Revolucionario Indigena-Comandancia General of the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional.
Subcomandante insurgente Marcos
